Strom Thurmond's family confirms paternity claim

An attorney for the family of former U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina confirmed Monday that in 1925, when he was 22, Thurmond fathered a child with a black teenage housekeeper. Frank Wheaton, Washington-Williams' attorney, said she came forward at the urging of her children and had no plans to ask the Thurmond estate for any money, according to the Post.

Strom's Daughter Feels 'Peace' (AP)
The 78-year-old daughter of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond and a black maid said Wednesday that now that she has come forward to disclose her heritage, she is finally at peace. Williams had long been rumored to be Thurmond's child, though she had previously denied it. She came forward now at the urging and encouragement of her children, Frank K. Wheaton, an attorney for Williams, said.

Thurmond 'has mixed race child'

A 78-year-old mixed race woman in the US is claiming she is the love child of controversial senator Strom Thurmond, who died this year aged 100. Retired schoolteacher Essie Mae Washington-Williams said her mother was a black maid working for the Thurmond family in South Carolina in the 1920s. Her attorney Frank K Wheaton told the Associated Press: "She's decided to come forward to bring some closure to what has been thought to be an old family secret.
